Volcanic Iceland

The surreal landscapes of Iceland are like a playground for budding geographers. It sits on two tectonic plates, the rift between which you can actually see at Thingvellir, and is covered in volcanoes, which in turn power an endless supply of hot springs, lagoons and sustainable power plants. There are rivers, glaciers and waterfalls all over the island, while the relentless battering of the Atlantic creates excellent examples of coastal erosion across unique black-sand beaches. Let’s not forget Aurora Borealis, either! Our five-day tour of Iceland includes a private tour of the Golden Circle – Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir Geothermal Area and Thingvellir National Park – a visit to the Blue Lagoon, as well as a glacier snowmobile ride and a hike across the frozen tongue of Sólheimajökull. You’ll also visit the black-sand beach of Reynisfjara, home to a flurry of epic coastal stacks, and get up close to some of the island’s most thunderingly powerful waterfalls.

Cliffs of Moher, Ireland

Fairytale Ireland

If coastal geography is the theme of your field trip, you’ll struggle to find a better subject that Ireland. Its rugged coastline is a case study in the many effects the ocean can have on the shores of a land, from wave action to erosion and longshore drift. Our week-long trip around Ireland starts and ends in Dublin, but spends most of its time tracing the coast from County Cork all the way up to Galway. Checkpoints include Kinsale and Dingle as we trace the West Cork Coastal Route and the Wild Atlantic Way. Highlights include the Old Head of Kinsale, the abandoned Great Blasket Island and the Cliffs of Moher – Ireland’s most spectacular natural specimen.

Two people sitting atop a sand dune and watching the sunset in Merzouga, Morocco

Epic Morocco

Few nations are as geographically diverse as Morocco, making it the perfect destination to explore multiple ecosystems in just one trip. Our comprehensive 11-day itinerary – which can be moulded to your needs – goes from the more Mediterranean climate of northern cities like Casablanca, Chefchaouen and Fes, then south into the heart of the Sahara Desert, before winding up to the heights of the Atlas Mountains, ending in Marrakech. This gives students the chance to explore the drastically different ecosystems of desert, mountain and coast, as well as the human geography that forms around them, be it in remote indigenous villages or culturally and historically rich cities. You’ll get a stargazing experience around the campfire of our Sahara desert camp, as well as encounters with locals and guided hikes (and a camel ride) across some of the country’s most significant landscapes.

Sloth hanging from a tree in Costa Rica

The Real Costa Rica

Like Morocco, Costa Rica is an extremely biodiverse country, but you could argue that it’s even more interesting. It’s home to hundreds of volcanoes – lying close to the intersection of four tectonic plates – and surrounding them are a range of fascinating rainforests, jungles and high-altitude cloud forests, and that’s before you consider the country’s gorgeous tropical coast. Our eight-day itinerary takes in three majorly different landscapes, starting with Arenal Volcano National Park. Our hotel in Arenal is full of natural hot springs, from which you can soak in warm waters while staring at the giant volcano acting as its source of energy. You’ll explore more hot springs, hike to a waterfall and go sloth-spotting in the forest. From there it’s up into mountainous Monteverde, where you’ll learn about Costa Rican cuisine and go on a nighttime cloud forest trek in search of howler monkeys and pumas. Our final destination is the laid-back Pacific surf town of Tamarindo – the perfect place to visualise wave action, or explore the tropical coastline via ATVs.

Atlantic Azores

This incredible archipelago, far off the coast of Portugal, is like a spiritual sibling to Iceland. It’s also an example of the unique landscapes formed on volcanic islands, geothermal waters flow all over and it’s a place with unlimited adventure potential. The main difference is the weather, which is much warmer, resulting in a remarkably verdant array of vegetation that paints the islands in a rich bright green coat. Our six-day itinerary on São Miguel starts with an exploration of the striking crater lakes of Sete Cidades, formed naturally by a volcano. You’ll have the chance to cycle around and kayak on the lakes, before moving focus onto Ribeira Grande. After an optional whale-spotting marine safari you’ll hike to Salto do Cabrito waterfall, the perfect place to learn about Azorean geology and sustainable geothermal energy, as well as a chance for a refreshing dip in the rock pools. The action is ramped up in Ribeira dos Caldeirões, where you’ll get to canyon down slippery ravines and abseil across a waterfall, before soaking off in some natural hot springs. Our last day includes a hike around Furnas Lake, but before that we’ll prep a traditional cozido stew, which will then cook underground for six hours using only the natural geothermal heat of the island. Our hearty dinner will be ready to serve by the time we’re back.
