Incredible Thailand and Laos by Train

Choose one of our most epic itineraries to kick off your summer celebrations in Southeast Asia. You should prepare for the occasional tropical shower, but the weather is so balmy at this time of year that moods tend not to dampen. Our border-crossing Rail Trip is a two-week extravaganza starting and ending in Bangkok. You’ll explore the ancient ruins of Sukhothai, gorge on street food in Chiang Mai and get up close to elephants at an ethical sanctuary in Northern Thailand. Over in Laos you’ll go on a river cruise down the Mekong, meet whiskey-making locals in remote villages, visit a sacred cave and trek to the spectacular Kuang Si Falls. We’ll end up in Vang Vieng, where you’ll go kayaking past limestone karsts on the Nam Song river, before hopping on an overnight train back to Bangkok, where a guided tour of the city awaits.

Atlantic Azores

June is among the best months of the year to visit this spectacularly beautiful volcanic archipelago far off the coast of Portugal. The itinerary features six action-packed days of outdoor adventure, starting with a jeep ride, cycle tour and kayak session at the surreal crater lakes of Sete Cidades. You’ll get to join an optional whale-watching safari tour, canyon down slippery ravines and abseil across a waterfall, while natural hot springs and a cocktail making class act as the perfect way to wind down. Our last day includes a hike around Furnas Lake, which we’ll embark on having prepared a traditional cozido stew, which will be cooked underground using only natural geothermal heat, perfectly in time for when we return from our walk.

Tropical sea with turquoise water and trees. Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

Blissful Bali

June falls right in the heart of Bali’s dry season, meaning you can expect sunshine to beam through the forests and glisten off remote rice paddies, while the island’s tropical beaches bathe in the beauty of clear blue skies. Our 12-day tour of Bali embraces every facet of what makes this such a dreamy summer destination. First there’s the unique cultural experiences, such as blessing ceremonies, sacred offerings and a traditional cooking class. Then there’s the outdoor adventures – think summiting a volcano at sunrise, snorkelling with sea turtles and picnicking at a serene jungle waterfall. Last, but definitely not least, is ultimate relaxation. Our trip winds down with a few days spent at a luxurious resort on the tiny island of Gili Trawangan, so you can enjoy tropical bliss however you prefer. Dip into the infinity pool, book a massage, stroll around the island or simply chill on the beach.

View of a classic white Greek terrace in Santorini with a stunning coastal backdrop

Greek Island Odyssey

Summer is when Southern Europe returns to its glorious best, with long days filled with clear skies and sunshine. June in particular hits the sweet spot as the school summer holidays have yet to begin, and the crowds aren’t quite as extreme as in July or August. This eight-day island-hopping itinerary is the ultimate Mediterranean retreat, celebrating all that is great about indulgent Greece. Sample some ancient history on a guided tour of the Acropolis in Athens, explore magical caves and hidden beaches on a boat tour around Milos, and master the art of Greek cuisine with a traditional cooking class on Naxos. We’ll end the trip in Santorini, with a cocktail in hand, watching the sun go down on one of the world’s most photogenic islands.

The Great Wall of China at sunrise

Icons of China by Train

China is another country that shows off its prettiest side as the summer starts in June. This 10-day Rail Trip utilises the country’s high-tech train network to zoom between the country’s most famous sights. We’ll start in the capital, Beijing, where you’ll explore Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and Jingshan Park, as well as go for a spot of Tai-Chi in Temple of Heaven Park. From there we’ll head to the Great Wall of China, with guided walks both at sunset and sunrise – with a rooftop barbecue and restful night’s sleep in between, of course – and later the ancient city of Pingyao. In Xi’an you’ll get to have a face-to-face with the spooky Army of Terracotta Warriors, before the trip comes to a close in China’s largest city, Shanghai. A breakfast tour and city tour awaits, as well as an ascent up Jinmao Tower and a visit to the nearby water town of Zhujiajiao. Finally, you’ll be treated to a sunset cruise along Huangpu River, which floats right past Shanghai’s iconic skyline.
