Akureyri, sometimes referred to as the capital of the North, is Iceland’s second largest city after Reykjavik. While it’s more like a village with a population of around 20,000 inhabitants, the small town can definitely hold its own with plenty of things to see and do. This hand-picked selection of the best bars in Akureyri proves that nightlife does not begin and end in Reykjavik.

The Post Office Bar is perhaps the closest thing to a nightclub in Akureyri, and the age limit of 22 years old aims to establish this. While the venue is often used for music festivals, its stage area is used for concerts on New Year’s. Thanks to its nightclub atmosphere, Pósthúsbarinn is the best place to enjoy delicious cocktails while dancing the night away in Akureyri.

This charming venue, which translates to ‘The Street Bar’ in Icelandic, is a favorite amongst locals. Decorated to reflect an older era of Iceland with its exposed timber building, Götubarinn also has an abundance of mirrors, comfortable couches, and a piano that guests can play at any time.

Located upstairs from Ölstofa Akureyrar and with less of a bar atmosphere, this is the place to visit if you want to know about this local brewery straight from the brewers themselves. With its relaxing interior of essential Scandinavian design, the Lounge takes you on a tasting adventure with information cards accompanying each glass. Local beers include White Ale and Toasted Porter, while seasonal beers include Doppelbock and Arctic Berry Ale.

Located in the downtown Hotel Kea, the professional and friendly establishment is often full. Reservations are recommended for dinner due to the frequency of large groups. The bistro menu offers a mix of Danish, American and Icelandic cuisine, i.e. hamburgers and local fish. The bar offers local beer, but the main pull to Mulaberg is the cocktail menu full of concoctions such as Purple Rain, King Hendrick, Goblin, Harley Quinn and Gustav, made with local spirits.

The knowledgeable bartenders will happily fill you in on everything about beer crafting and talk your way through a beer tasting sampler. A happy hour offer is available every day from 6pm – 8pm, along with live music every weekend and a great whiskey selection.
