Szentendre is a popular destination for Hungarians, a short enough trip from Budapest that it’s easily accessible, but far enough that the dirt and the noise of the city can be left behind for a weekend. The idyllic town is one of the best kept in the area, and with it comes a certain serenity. Whether you’re planning on staying for a weekend, using Szentendre as a base to explore the rest of the area, or just passing through on a longer bike journey, any of these places will make your visit special.

Bükkös Hotel & Spa

For those looking to really unwind in Szentendre, there’s Bükkös, a four-star hotel located just on the outskirts of the city by the stream of the same name that acts as a sort of boundary into the town proper. It’s modern, luxurious and pristine, with some rooms having a great view over the town and others even having direct access to a relaxing rooftop terrace. The wellness aspect naturally has every corner covered, meaning you might not even have time to leave and explore Szentendre.

Hotel Centrum Szentendre

The design of Hotel Centrum took inspiration from the Mediterranean vibe of the town itself, and as a result it’s taken on a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. It’s located about as centrally as you can get, and so has everything on its doorstep: the promenade by the Danube, numerous art galleries, and the various monuments and structures of the town itself.

Mathias Rex

While simply decorated, Mathias Rex is one of the most luxurious hotels in Szentendre. There’s a sense of quality about the place from the moment you step in through the doors, from the immaculate original wood floors to the particulars of the ornaments. The downstairs restaurant – built into a refurbished cellar for an impressively romantic setting – caters to all guests, but there’s even the option to enjoy breakfast out on the outside terrace.

Panorama & Sauna Suite

Homestay

This Airbnb offers a particularly impressive view, even if it does meaning hiking up into the Szentendre hills to reach it. While it is admittedly secluded from the town itself, the place is so complete that you might not even find the urge to leave anyway. There’s a sauna, a gym, a swimming pool and a large outdoor area for sunbathing. If you’re planning on staying in Szentendre for longer, this might be the best option for you.

Hotel Róz

While Hotel Róz is about a kilometer from the town centre, it’s still only a short distance from the Danube and the activities that come with it. The hotel itself offers up a whole range of meals covering Hungarian dinners and American breakfasts, which is sheltered in the pleasant, relaxing courtyard that comes with its own fish pond.

Papsziget Camping

For something a little more low-key, the island of Papsziget – which is located just a short distance from the centre of Szentendre – offers a range of more outdoorsy options. The 2-4 person huts located (and facing) the river offer a no-frills connection with nature that is hard to get so close to the city. Or you could just pitch up your own tent, of course.
