The 10 Best Restaurants In Kitzbühel, Austria

Liz English

Famous for its pistes, Kitzbühel has become a hot-spot for skiing, snowboarding and other outdoor activities. Whether on or off the slopes, good food can be had by all in and around this historic Austrian town. We show you the best places.

Red slope

Sporthotel Reisch

Aside from catering for sporting holidays, this family-run hotel also offers great grub. For those spending long days on the pistes in winter, hearty Austrian stews are highly recommended for fueling up and getting warm again. The summer menu features fresh salads with specialities from the area, such as speck (cured ham) and kaspressknödel (dumplings filled with local mountain cheese).

Huber Bräu

This restaurant is ideally situated in the heart of historic Kitzbühel. It’s usually home to a mixture of both tourists and locals. The staff at Huber Bräu are renowned for their hospitality and friendliness towards their many foreign visitors, while still maintaining a natural, rustic, Tyrolean atmosphere. The portions here are quite generous and good value for money and the menu features all the classic local fare.

View from the Hahnenkamm

Berghaus Tirol

At 1,750 meters up and perched atop the Hahnenkamm, Berghaus Tirol has a breathtaking view across the mountains, whether in the height of summer or the depths of winter. Reachable via the Hahnenkammbahn, this restaurant is a great stop-off point for skiers during a day on the pistes, or for an unusual meal out in summer. The sunset from here is truly a worth the altitudinous trek. The food here is largely traditional Tyrolean, but there is a small “wok” section of the menu, where an Austrian take on stir-fry is offered.

Wirtshaus Vordergrub

Located down in the valley, this inn looks the picture of Austria, with flower-bordered balconies and wood-paneled facades. The food here is high quality and beautifully presented, although the real attraction is their 100-bottle-rich wine cellar. It has wines from the region, neighboring Italy and further afield.

Walsenbachweg 14, Kitzbühel, Austria, +43 5356 62306

Rosis Sonnbergstubn

Towering 400 meters above Kitzbühel itself (that is, 1,200 meters above sea level) and right next to the Bichalm ski lift, Rosis offers homemade local specialities such as veal with pumpkin-seed oil or mountain trout. Sweet or savory all-in-one packages mean that walkers or skiers can combine the price of the lift with a meal or snack at Rosis, which, during peak skiing season is both a time and money saver. Not to mention the talented proprietor Rosi Schipflinger, who, as well as being renowned for her hostess skills, is also a singer and a famous face in Kitzbühel town.

Burger

Sigi’s Wateringhole and Grill

Particularly good during the summer season, this burger joint is ideal for an outdoor meal. No matter how scrumptious the local delicacies are, during high temperatures sometimes just a simple BBQ-style burger in a bun is required. Here, customers are treated to a variety of grilled meats, burger patties and even garden parties when the weather is fine. The restaurant is family-friendly and generous with their portion sizes; especially when it comes to the (gigantic) family burgers.

Jochbergerstrasse 12, Kitzbühel, Austria, +43 5356 6981

1st Lobster

The clue is in the name for this one: 1st Lobster’s forte lies in their seafood. With imports from the American east coast, 1st Lobster has a large array of fish dishes which stand up to even the harshest of critics. The exclusive clientele that Kitzbühel attracts will feel right at home here, and are served by the most impeccable of wait staff. Booking in advance is essential, as this one fills up quickly.

Im Gries 6, Kitzbühel, Austria, +43 5356 66698

Hornköpflhütte

Restaurant, German, Austrian, European

This alpine venue offers a spectacular view over the mountains, including over Austria’s highest peak: the Groß Glockner. Although magical during the ski season, when the peaks are capped with snow, the summer season is breathtaking too. Green pastures and meadows full of flowers dominate all around. The food here is tasty and filling traditional fare, but what really makes this a top restaurant is its welcoming staff and the beautiful location.

Lois Stern

This restaurant provides a welcome change from the traditional food served up in mountain huts, as it is not dissimilar to a funky fusion bistro typical of larger cities. Mixing a Thai influence with local produce, not to mention an open kitchen (expect to be enthralled by flames and food being thrown around), this is a dining experience rarely had in an Alpine town. Foodies will love the flavor combinations and lovers of Asian cuisine will be impressed by how well the chefs do sashimi. Don’t forget to book in advance.

Josef-Pirchl-Straße 3, Kitzbühel, Austria, +43 5356 74882

El Moro de Venezia

Pizza and pasta, created and served by enthusiastic Italians: that’s what customers here can expect. And it’s not just the typical Italian specialities, but also platters of cured meats, roasted vegetables, cheeses and bread – all fresh from across the border. Summer weather makes the restaurant even better, as the delightful location means diners can sit outside on the terrace, overlooking a quiet street. It’s a must-visit on any trip to Kitzbühel.
