Indiana Jones has returned with a new cast of helpers and hinderers, a new archeological McGuffin to track down and a classic set of global destinations. To celebrate the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), seemingly the last time we’ll see Harrison Ford’s unorthodox archeologist, we wanted to take a look at the settings and locations of the new film, and how you can visit them with Culture Trip.

Setjetting is a great way to travel, as you follow in the footsteps of your heroes in some of the world’s coolest destinations, living your childhood fantasies along the way. No hero has crossed the global map more frequently than Indiana Jones, whose globetrotting adventures have entertained us for decades. Along with any new Indy film comes the tantalising question – which locations does he visit this time? Well, while Germany and New York City (both brought to life with the help of Scotland) both feature early on, these are the thrilling Dial of Destiny destinations you can visit on a small-group Culture Trip adventure – don’t forget to pack your hat, and your whip!

Athens and the Aegean Sea, Greece

Fleeing from Morocco, the next stop on Indy’s globetrot is Greece, to meet with an old friend docked in an Athens harbour. There’s only about one scene on the mainland – which was actually shot in Sicily – as Indy’s old friend is a sailor and professional diver tasked with helping him find an ancient relic. The rest of the film’s time in Greece is spent somewhere out in the Aegean Sea, as well as deep below the surface on a spooky, eel-infested mission. You’ll follow a similar seafaring trajectory on our Greek Island Odyssey trip, which starts off with a brief exploration of Athens before island-hopping in the Aegean Sea, stopping off at Milos, Naxos and Santorini. During your time in Athens, be sure to visit the National Archaeological Museum, where the actual real life dial of destiny is stored. The Antikythera Mechanism, an extraordinary astronomical device potentially created by ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes, is the central plot device to the entire film. So it would be rude not to see the real-life version, in the rusty flesh, on a visit to the Greek capital. Who knows? You might even discover its secret power!
