Here's Why Denmark's South Zealand Is the Perfect Romantic Getaway
Denmark has something for every traveller. Copenhagen for fashionistas, Aarhus for culture vultures, Bornholm for nature lovers – and the scenic towns and fishing villages of south Zealand for romantic souls keen to escape the noise of the city. The peaceful atmosphere and picturesque landscape of south Zealand make it the ideal place for a romantic getaway, whether you prefer a walk amid nature or a stroll down cobblestone alleys.
Start your trip with a relaxed walk in Køge’s historic quarter. The colourful buildings and the country’s oldest half-timbered house – dating to 1527 – are a world away from the traffic-jammed streets you’ve left behind.
Take a one-hour drive south and visit Gavnø Castle. Aside from a great collection of paintings, the rococo castle has a magnificent garden filled with tulips, ideal for a romantic walk. It’s also home to the only castle brewery in Denmark. You may think that beer tasting isn’t a very romantic activity, but after entering the rustic 19th-century farm buildings that house the brewery, you’ll soon change your mind.
Make sure you also pay a visit to Møns Klint. The chalky cliffs run for 6km (3.7mi) and rise 128m (420ft) above sea level. Walk along the beach and cycle in Klinteskoven forest. Horse riding is also an option and – as long as you’re a bit familiar with the activity – will definitely add romance to your trip. Weather permitting, you can even don your bathing suits and snorkelling masks and discover the fascinating, fossil-filled seabed.
On your way back to the north of Zealand, stop at Præstø for a last stroll around quiet cobblestone alleys and finish off your romantic trip at Stevns Klint, a Unesco Heritage site that highlights the planet’s long geological history.
Not sure where to stay while visiting? Here’s a rundown of the best hotels nearby – all bookable on Culture Trip.
Rødvig Kro & Badehotel for a beachfront bolthole in Rødvig Stevns
Hotel
A popular wedding venue reminiscent of the romantic hotels in Copenhagen, Rødvig Kro & Badehotel scores high on romance. A fabulous waterside setting certainly helps, with many guest rooms affording beautiful views over the Baltic Sea. Arrange romantic goodies – sparkling wine, chocolate and flowers – to surprise your loved one upon arrival. What’s more, you’re just minutes from Stevns Klint.
Camønogaarden for rustic charm in Borre
Hotel
If your idea of romance is folksy, Camønogaarden is the place for you – and your other half. It’s an unpretentious rural retreat, set in the centre of south Zealand’s Møn island near Liselund, surrounded by nothing but farmland and forest. Pick from wonderfully quirky accommodation, ranging from glamping to a cosy caravan and a snug cottage. Enjoy blazing sunsets from the pretty garden before cooking a romantic dinner over an open fire.
Hotel Kirstine for a traditional stay in Næstved town centre
Hotel
Hotel Kirstine’s numerous incarnations run back to the early 18th century. From farmhouse to post office and home of several mayors, it’s imbued with a real sense of local history. The handsome architecture also presents numerous intimate nooks and snug corners in which to enjoy special time with your sweetheart. The atmospheric restaurant offers a menu of home-made and locally sourced cooking, perfect for a candlelit dinner for two. Præstø is within a 30-minute drive.
