Set on the southern coast of Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second largest island, Savusavu is the place to discover the quieter, less touristy side of the Pacific nation. When you’re not sampling local fare at the abundant restaurants, retreat to one of these luxury resorts hugging the Hibiscus Highway.

Billed as “resort life without resort prices,” Daku is a hidden treasure in Savusavu. The villas are particularly stunning. Both Villa Hazel and the Infinity Villa offer private pools with panoramas through the palm trees across the shimmering bay. Larger groups should opt for the Pool House, which can sleep up to eight people and is plonked just beside the main pool.

Sitting pretty on one of Savusavu’s best beaches, SigaSiga Sands is made up of spacious oceanfront bungalows. The Seahorse Bungalow claims the patch closest to the beach, for those who like to fall asleep to the sound of lapping waves. The resort also has a made-to-order menu peppered with Indo-Fijian delights like fish lolo and kava, a traditional root drink.

The brainchild of French oceanographic explorer, Jean-Michel Cousteau (the son of scuba-pioneer Jacques Cousteau), this monikered luxury resort is renowned for its on-site dive centre. Here, you can dive the world-class Namena Marine Reserve sites, teeming with barracuda, trevalis and sharks. You can also become a certified diver with the three-day PADI course. The resort is naturally eco-friendly, too, with most of its food sourced from the organic garden. A highlight is the weekly Fijian lovo feast.

Incredibly private and spacious, two villas have plunge pools, while the grand residence has an infinity pool peeking over the canopy towards the sea. Buggies are provided to get to the nearby beach. For something special, ask the team to take you and your significant other to the sandbank for a champagne picnic.

Perched on a volcanic uplift, the villas offer panoramic vistas back to Vanua Levu – best seen from the private pools. Each one is light-filled with shuttered windows, high ceilings and rainforest surrounds. Underwater explorers can dive with the resident scalloped hammerhead sharks in the Koro Sea or in the pristine coral reefs of Natewa Bay.
