You’ll find Lake Constance in the foothills of the Alps, straddling the three countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The German side arguably has it the best, with the most sun. Nearby, there’s also a small ski resort to visit in Lindau in the winter (and Vorarlberg in Austria is also reachable, with 11 ski resorts). Come summer, it’s all about exploring the beautiful harbours and getting out onto the water itself. Here’s our guide to the best hotels around Lake Constance.

Residenz Seeterrasse

The rooms at Seeterrasse are a showcase of simple, stylish product design. It’s function over form, but deep maroons and greens create a cosy feel. Big windows capture the natural light during the day, and the lake is just a few metres away. The terrace and restaurant are perfect for a sunny day, with a fish-focused menu from Harald Leissners.

Hotel Halm

There are 1,010 rooms at the enormous Hotel Halm, which is also kitted out to hold cocktail classes and wedding receptions in its opulent Moorish Hall. The rooms range from basic singles to superior doubles and suites with Jacuzzis. The restaurant, dubbed Le Marrakech, is unique in the area, serving up Moroccan specialities and a Middle Eastern Sunday dinner.

Hotel Gasthaus Hirschen

If you’re coming to Lake Constance in search of a true getaway, Hotel Gasthaus Hirschen is the place to go. It’s out on the idyllic Höri peninsula on the lake, with a peaceful island garden looking onto the Alps. The focus here is on wellness, and the spa offers massages, saunas and facials. All rooms have an emphasis on natural materials and light. The restaurant specialises in ox meat and homemade sausages.

ArtVilla am See

Villa

ArtVilla am See is like one of those remarkable Mediterranean holiday homes in-laws always seem to own in Hollywood films. Set on the edge of the Halbinsel Mettnau nature reserve, an important habitat for waterbirds, it’s away from the tourist bustle of Lake Constance. The bedrooms and apartments are spacious and have a traditional, homey feel. Nearby, you can play tennis, hire bikes or go horse riding or canoeing with the ArtVilla’s canoes or kayaks.

Seehotel Villa Linde

Villa Linde is on the banks of Lake Constance and has the Michelin-starred restaurant s’Äpfle attached. Head chef Kevin Leitner and his team focus on regional food with an innovative style. Try the vinegar plum with quark balls, caramelised pecan and thyme oil, or char with smoked fennel cream, pickled pear and fried-onion vinaigrette. Then, head back to your room for extreme comfort, thanks to Zillertal beds, maritime charm and views of the lake.

Bodenseehotel Renn

Renovated in 2016, the Bodenseehotel Renn lets nature do the talking. There are a beautiful garden and patio to relax on in the summer, and you’ll notice flowers in the windowsills in spring. You’re only ever a short walk away from the edge of Lake Constance and the restaurant Guter Tropfen. On the plate, try the Schwäbische Käseknöpfle, a gloriously cheesy alpine dish.

JUCKERs Boutique-Hotel

JUCKERs lovely boutique hotel is immersed in nature, with an emphasis on natural materials and warm tones in the bedrooms. Outside, beside the lake, there’s a world of cycling trails and forests to explore – owner Thomas Jucker is a keen cyclist himself. After a day outdoors, head to the spa garden for a Jacuzzi, and tell host dog Gino all about your day. Dine at The Linde restaurant, where Thomas cooks up gourmet dishes, including steak tartare and lamb medallions.
