The Bridge (Bron/Broen)

The Bridge

The Bridge is a Swedish-Danish crime-drama series that was first broadcast in 2011 and this year aired its fourth season. When a dead body was found on Øresund bridge, the motorway and railway that connects Malmö to Copenhagen, Danish Martin Rohde (Kim Bodnia) and Swedish Saga Norén (Sofia Helin) are called to solve the mystery. Bron/Broen is filmed in both Denmark and Sweden, so viewers can get a glimpse of both countries’ landscapes and cultures.

The Danish Girl is a film about Lili Elbe, one of the first recipients of sex reassignment surgery. Even though the renowned film presents some real facts, it also raised criticism for just scratching the surface of Elbe’s life. Directed by Tom Hooper, The Danish Girl premiered in US cinemas November 2015. Lili Elbe is played by Eddie Redmayne, and Alicia Vikander, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for this movie, performed the role of Gerda Wegener, Lili’s wife.

Vikings

Vikings

As the name suggests, Vikings is a TV series about the expeditions and conquests of the fearless Scandinavian warriors and it starts from the time Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the most popular legendary Norse heroes, started the raids to England. According to some critics, Vikings has many historical inaccuracies and several events are fictional, but in general, it’s worth a look. If fights, blood, decapitated heads and cut-off arms aren’t really what you’d like to watch in order to relax after work, you may want to avoid this series.

The Rain

The Rain

OK, The Rain isn’t exactly a TV show about Denmark, but a story about two Danish siblings who try to find their father and some answers after Scandinavia was destroyed by a virus. It is the first original Danish series for Netflix, and its trailer is so captivating it had to be on this list. The first episode will be screened in May this year so keep your eyes open.

The Day Will Come (Der Kommer en dag)
